After a storm, the first job is stopping water: a tarp or a temporary patch.
What this job usually includes
- Emergency tarping or a temporary patch to keep water out
- Photos and notes of the damage for your records
- A written quote for the permanent repair or replacement
Questions to ask before hiring
- Are you local, and where is your business based?
- Is the tarp priced separately from the permanent repair?
- Don't sign over insurance benefits or pay in full up front. Ask for a written quote first.
What affects the price
- Tarp size, roof pitch, and storm debris or a tree that has to come off first
- After-storm demand and how fast you need someone
- Hidden damage to the decking found once work starts
When not to wait
- Water coming in, or shingles or decking visibly missing: tarp as soon as it's safe
- Even without a leak, have the roof looked at after a major storm
- Stay off the roof and away from downed power lines; let the pro do it
Common questions
Should I call my insurance company first?
Many policies want you to prevent further damage right away, which a tarp does. Take photos, keep receipts, and check your policy's claim steps.
How do I spot a storm-chaser?
Be cautious with pressure to sign today, requests for large deposits, or offers to "handle your insurance". Get written quotes and check who you're hiring.
